Cheverus won its first state championship since 1967 as the State Class A Boys Swimming and Diving Championships were held Monday at Bowdoin College.
The Stags piled up 372 points to beat out Bangor (298), followed by Deering (19), Cape Elizabeth (182), Scarborough (171) and Brunswick (169). Morse was 13th with 70.50 points.
Swimmer of the Meet was Jerry Gravel of Scarborough, who set state records in the 100 breaststroke (57.83) and 200 individual medley (1:53.07).
“We were very happy with our evening session and broke four school records,” said Brunswick coach David Bright.

Nate Samson of Brunswick stood out as he took second in both the 50 free (school-record 22.23) and 100 backstroke (53.23, breaking his own mark set in the KVAC Championships).
Top-eight finishes

Ararat High School competes in the 200-yard freestyle at the State Class A Boys Swimming and Diving Championships, held Monday at Bowdoin College.Top-eight finishes for Brunswick included the 200- yard medley relay of Samson, Henry Ditzel, Jacob Cost and Ben Farrell (third, schoolrecord 1:42.96), Ditzel in the 200 freestyle (sixth, 1:53.71) and 100 breaststroke (fourth, 1:02.56), Ezra Rogers in onemeter diving (eighth, 233.40 points), Cost in the 100 butterfly (eighth, 58.25), and 100 back (fifth, 55.99) and the 200 free relay of Samson, Cost, Ben Farrell, and Ditzel (third, school-record 1:34.79).
Morse highlights included the 200 medley relay of Drew Ceglinski, Kyle Bauer, Otto Werwaiss and Paden Stanton (eighth, 1:54.18), Josh Valentine in the 500 free (seventh, 5:2.91) and Bauer in the 100 breaststroke (seventh, 1:06.09).
“I was very happy,” said Morse coach Todd Marco. “We had personal-bests across the board. And, we have no seniors.”
