Bates senior David Pless, a two-time national champion in the shot put, finished second in the weight throw at the NCAA Division III indoor track championships in Naperville, Ill.

Pless recorded his best throw of 64 feet, 10¾ inches in the third of six rounds. Pete Delzer of Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the winner with a distance of 67-9½.

Pless competes Saturday in the shot put, along with teammate Sean Enos, who finished 11th in the weight throw.

Coby Horowitz of Bowdoin was the fastest qualifier in the men’s mile with 4:13.01. Keene State’s Ryan Widzgowski, a junior from Camden, was No. 2 at 4:13.15, and Tully Hannan of Bates also qualified for Saturday’s final.

James LePage of Bates and Kevin Desmond of Southern Maine qualified for the final in the 800 meters. LePage, a senior from Cumberland, posted the fifth-fastest time, 1:52.71. Desmond, a sophomore from Monmouth, had the seventh-best time, 1:53.04.

Colby’s Dom Kone, the defending champion in the 60-meter dash, was slowed by a hamstring injury and didn’t make it to Saturday’s final.

Mitchell Black of Brunswick helped Tufts to a second-place finish in the men’s distance medley relay with a time of 10:00.23.

• Georgetown’s Rachel Schneider, a senior from Sanford, ran a time of 4:38.29 to advance to the final in the mile at the NCAA Division I championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

BASEBALL

IOWA 9, MAINE 2: The Hawkeyes (6-10) scored three runs in the fourth inning and six more in the sixth against the Black Bears (6-10) in Port Charlotte, Fla., to overcome an early Maine lead.

The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first when Sam Balzano singled, stole second and scored on a single by Brian Doran. Maine got its other run in the seventh on a single by Colin Gay that scored Troy Black.

SOFTBALL

TENN. TECH 4, MAINE 1: Melody Christian had three hits with an RBI and a run as the Golden Eagles (8-7) beat Maine (1-14) at Clearwater, Fla.

Stephanie Wood doubled and scored in the first inning, and Emj Fogel had two hits for the Black Bears.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE 10, MAINE 4: Kelly Stowe went 3 for 4 with two RBI and four runs scored as the Penguins (1-3) handled the Black Bears (1-15) at Clearwater, Fla.
