CUMBERLAND — Roy E. Howland, of Conway, N.H., and Cumberland, died March 7 at Mineral Springs Nursing and Rehab in North Conway, N.H. He was surrounded by his family.

Born Oct. 4, 1916, in Stark, N.H., he was the son of Delivin and Mary Maquire Howland. He served in the army during World War II. While home in Stark during the war he captured a German prisoner of war who escaped from a prisoner camp in northern New Hampshire and was living off the land.

On St. Patrick’s Day, 1946, he met his future wife, Barbara Broughton of Conway, N.H. They married Sept. 15, 1946, and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. They made their home in Cumberland for 46 years before moving back to Conway in 1997.

His life work was as a professional driver. He started his career driving buses for Costello Bus Line of Berlin, N.H., then went to work driving trailer trucks for St. Johnsbury Trucking in Vermont before transferring to Portland where he worked until his retirement in 1978. After retiring he enjoyed traveling, RVing, bowling, rock hounding, fishing, and his hunting trip each fall with his son, sons-in-law, and grandsons in Upton.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Broughton Howland, on May 3, 2009; his parents; and grandson, Ronald Brown Jr., in 1972.

Howland is survived by is survived by his son, Peter, and wife, Lucy, of Conway, N.H.; two daughters, Sally Brown, and husband, Ron, of Cumberland, and Linda Fernald, and husband, Jim, of Nottingham, N.H.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, Stuart and wife, Keri Brown, and their children, Jordan, Caleb, Julia and Claire; Chad and wife, Jen Fernald; Christine Brown Irish and children Maddy, Abby and Cam; Becky Howland; Matt Howland; Joe and wife, Dawn Fernald, and their children, Corinne, Amelia, Natalie and Jossalyn; Evan and wife, Anne Howland, and their children, Jillian, Griffin and Hannah; and Elizabeth Howland.

With heartfelt appreciation, his family would like to acknowledge and thank all of his nurses, caregivers and the support staff at Mineral Springs for the care, comfort they gave Howland over the past four years.

A military graveside service will be held May 1 at the Conway Village Cemetery, Conway N.H. Private family visiting hours have been held.
