L.L. Bean employee John Butler demonstrates proper catch and release during an in-store fly fishing clinic, part of the company’s annual Spring Fishing Weekend ,March 15-17. Butler, who performed the demonstration six times during the weekend, cautioned that he can’t always guarantee a catch, despite the decided advantages of a small, instore trout pond. “It’s not like shooting fish in a barrel, the fish still have to bite,” said Butler. On this day he snared a brook trout on the first cast, much to the delight of curious onlookers.

Noted bird expert Dr. Ted Allen was the guest speaker at the Freeport Women’s Club on March 15, where he regaled the crowd with tales of stray warblers, rogue chimney swifts, and yellow bellied sapsuckers. The informative talk drew a large crowd and many questions. 

Durham welcomed Pamela Cloutier last week as the new deputy treasurer, tax collector and town clerk. “We’re glad to have her onboard,” said Durham Town Administrative Assistant Janet Smith. Cloutier is a Durham resident.
