Woman, sons recovering after sign falls on them

A woman and two of her sons were improving Sunday after being seriously injured when a flight information billboard fell on them at an airport.

A third son was killed Friday when the electronic board, weighing at least 300 pounds, fell from a wall at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

The boys’ mother, Heather Bresette, had broken ankles and a crushed pelvis. She had surgeries over the weekend, but she was still in intensive care and unconscious, University Hospital spokeswoman Nicole Wyatt said.

The Bresettes, a family of seven, took a weeklong vacation to Destin, Fla., and were about to fly home to Overland Park, Kan., when the arrival-departure sign fell.

Two Icelandic men killed when chutes fail to deploy

The co-owner of a facility where two Icelandic men died while skydiving says they did not deploy their main parachutes.

T.K. Hayes of Skydive City in Zephyrhills said the men’s equipment appeared to be working properly, although authorities are still investigating.

Automatic devices with backup chutes were activated and the devices were out of their containers, but Hayes said they didn’t have time to inflate before impact.

The Pasco County sheriff’s office identified the victims as 41-year-old instructor Orvar Arnarson and 25-year-old Andrimar Pordarson.

The men did not return from their third jump of the day Saturday, setting off an hours-long investigation.

Their bodies were found in the woods near the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport.

Storm brings heavy snow to Colorado and Kansas

Few signs of spring are being found in parts of the Midwest as a snowstorm tracks mostly along Interstate 70, bringing heavy snow and high winds.

The National Weather Service said parts of Colorado and northwest Kansas saw 10 to 15 inches of snow Saturday, and southwestern Nebraska had up to 7 inches. Winds gusting at speeds of up to 45 mph created snow drifts of 2 to 3 feet in the three states, said Ryan Husted, a meteorologist with the weather service in Goodland, Kan.

Points eastward weren’t as lucky as the system moved on. Winter storm warnings and advisories have been issued for Sunday and Monday as far east as Pennsylvania.
