WINDHAM – Quick investigation work led to a rescue of a man in Windham this weekend who ingested a mass quantity of stolen pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

On Saturday, March 23, at about 2:20 p.m., a man whose identity police have yet to release entered the Hannaford Supermarket in Windham demanding drugs at the pharmacy counter.

The man is accused of stealing an undisclosed amount of the generic form of the prescription drug Dilaudid. Windham police officers responded with Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

Witnesses provided responding officers information as to the robber’s identity and officers attempted to locate the suspect while evidence was gathered at the store.

The suspect’s vehicle was located unoccupied and was seized by police. At 4:25 p.m., police located the suspect, who had consumed a large amount of the pills and was unconscious. Police say he had attempted suicide.

Windham Rescue responded and revived the man and then transported him to Maine Medical Center.

The suspect was not arrested given his medical situation when he was located, police say. As a result, his name has not been released. The investigation continues and Windham police anticipate the suspect will be charged with robbery when he has overcome his medical crisis.
