Middle school boosters collecting shoes
Members of the Freeport Middle School Sports Boosters are accepting donations of unwanted shoes to help provide shoes to people in third-world countries and raise money for the sports booster club. Shoes must be in wearable, good condition and in pairs. They are not accepting winter boots, Ugg boots, rubber boots, slippers, skates or flip flops.
Collection boxes can be found during March at Freeport Middle School, Mast Landing School, Morse Street School and Bath Savings Bank in Freeport. For more information, contact Sherry Brown-Spaulding at [email protected].
Easter Week at First Parish Church
First Parish Church U.C.C., 40 Main St. Freeport will start Easter Week with a special participatory service on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. On Good Friday, March 29 at noon, there will be a service of readings and prayer in the sanctuary. Easter morning, March 31 at 6, there will be a sunrise service at the South Freeport docks followed by a breakfast at the First Parish Church at 7 a.m. Easter family service will be at 10 a.m.
Holy week services
A Holy Thursday Service will be held March 28 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Freeport, 185 Main St. Foot washing and the Lord’s Supper will be included in the service and all are welcome. The First Baptist Church of Freeport and the First Congregational Church in Pownal are sponsoring an Easter Sunrise Service on March 31 on the peak of Bradbury Mountain at 6:15 a.m. The Rev. John Wentworth will be officiating. There will be a service at the foot of the mountain with Pastor Sandy Williams for those unable to climb. In the case of severely inclement weather, the service will be held at the First Congregational Church in Pownal. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at the Pownal church following the service and all are welcome.
Monthly tea tasting
on April 1
Jacqueline’s Tea Room, 201 Main St. is hosting a free monthly tea tasting on April 1 from 6-7 p.m. There will be five varieties of tea to sample. The gift shop will be open and 100 varieties of tea will be for sale. For more information, call 865-2123 or visit www.jacquelinestearoom.com.
Academic honors
Emily Martin, a 2012 graduate of Freeport High School, has been placed on the 2012 fall semester William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. Dean’s list for outstanding academic performance is given to students with a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
Wilbur’s host
annual egg hunt
Wilbur’s Chocolate Factory, 174 Lower Main St., Freeport is hosting its annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 30 from 10:30 a.m.-noon, weather permitting. The Easter Bunny and Wilbur the Moose will be at the free event which is open to children from toddler to Grade 5. Call 865-4071 for more information.

The town has posted certain town roads to limit heavy loads until May 15 depending on the weather. All regular delivery route trucks are exempt. Library news and notes
The GWC (Giving Children Warmth) program will be making blankets for children in Afghanistan by knitting squares and sewing them together. The group meets on Mondays from 2:45-4 p.m. to teach volunteers from age 11 through adult to knit.
Storytime for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
Jess Day, owner and director of Midcoast Music Together will present “Sing, Move, Dance and Play” on Thursday, March 28 at 10 a.m. The event celebrates a child’s innate ability to sing, move, dance, explore and play. It is open to children from infancy to 6. Siblings and grown ups are welcome.
The FCL Reading Group will discuss “When We Were the Kennedys,” by Maine author Monica Wood on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
The April Vacation Movie on Tuesday, April 16 at 1 p.m. will be “Wreck it Ralph,” rated PG. The movie is 1 hour 50 minutes long. Admission is free and includes a bag of popcorn.
A “Grow Your Own Organic Garden” workshop with an instructor from the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will be held on Wednesday, April 17 from 6-8 p.m. Register by calling 865-3307. A $5 fee for handouts will be collected at the workshop.
