HARPSWELL
A new public charter school that plans to open in September reached its enrollment deadline Thursday having collected 60 letters of intent.
By 5 p.m. Thursday, parents were to have submitted an online intent-to-enroll form. If more than 60 students were seeking admission, the school had planned to hold a lottery at 3 p.m.today to determine which students would get the first 60 slots.
Head of School John D’Anieri said after Thursday’s deadline that Harpswell Coastal Academy had received 60 intent-to-enroll forms, so the lottery has been called off.
There were 36 forms submitted for prospective sixthgraders and 24 for ninth grade.
Harpswell Coastal Academy will offer “project-based and place-based curriculum emphasizing experiential learning in grades 6 through 12.” The school has 60 openings this year, and had expected to open in September with 30 students in sixth grade and 30 students in ninth grade. The school will add other grades in subsequent years.
Because the school will not use a system of traditional grades, it wasn’t necessary to enroll 30 in each initial class, D’Anieri said.
