LYDIA SMITH, Gracia LeClerc, Peter Hahesy and Hannah Lawrence, pictured from left, won for their grade levels in Williams-Cone School’s Read Across America Celebration last month. The Read Across America Celebration at Williams-Cone School in Topsham challenged students in grades K-5 to read at home every night and log their minutes during the month of March. K-2 students set goals of 100 minutes per week, while students in grades 3-5 had goals of 150 minutes per week. Activities included weekly prize drawings, community readers, guest speaker Mariah Price from the Topsham Public Library and Book Character Hat Day. Laurie St. Pierre, owner of Percy’s Burrow of Topsham, sponsored the prizes including book gift certificates for more than 100 students who met their reading goals each week. Fourth-grader Hannah Lawrence won Aslan the Lion for being the Williams-Cone student with the most minutes. Williams-Cone School Read Across America Reading Champions include: Classroom with the Most Minutes: Miss Becker’s 4th Grade (20,459 minutes); classroom with the Highest Participation: Mrs. Kish’s 2nd Grade (96 percent); kindergarten: Lydia Smith (1,008); grade 1: EmaRae Ackerly (1,400); grade 2: Peter Hahesy (3,650); grade 3: Gracia LeClerc (2,260); grade 4: overall reading minutes champion, Hannah Lawrence (5,630); and grade 5: Aidan Treutel (2,730)
