Outdoor track was set to get under way this week, while baseball, softball and tennis don’t begin until later this month
Baseball
Coach — Randy Ridley, 14th year.
2012 highlights — 8-7 in Mountain Valley Conference. Beat Sacopee Valley 9-2 in Western C prelim, lost to Telstar 13-1 in quarterfinals.
Personnel lost — Mason Smith (P/OF), Dalton Dunphy (C), Aaron Boyington (OF) Joe Osmond (P/SS), Kyle Priddle (2B), Kody Priddle (3B/P).
Personnel returning — Seniors Brandon Hovey (1B, P), Ryan Brewer (OF); junior Tucker Brannon; sophomores Kyle Bourget, RJ Sargent and Joe Philbrick.
Newcomers — Seniors Kyle Sheehan, Mason Haley, Logan McGuire; juniors Dillon Clifford, Brett Gravel; sophomores Darren Ward, Adam Desjardins.
Coach’s comments — “Preseason is going well with only 17 players in the whole high school program. Kids are working hard and have a great optimistic attitude towards the upcoming season.
“Our goals in Lisbon are the same every year. Win the MVC, make the playoffs, having at least one home playoff game and go deep into the playoffs. It has been this way since I started coaching. No matter how many players are coming back or how many players we lost from the previous year.
“Having lost seven starters from last year’s team, including Ryan Riordan who has transferred to Oak Hill, it will be a difficult task to repeat our successes from last year. We do have a good bunch of pitchers led by Kyle Bourget, who won four games as a freshman last year, while facing some of the MVC’s best.
“But, we still have to replace Riordan, Mason Smith and Jo Osmond in the rotation. Lost Dalton Dunphy, best clutch hitter and RBI leader from last year, Tucker will replace him behind the plate. We had a hard time scoring runs last year and at times keeping other teams off the scoreboard. That will have to change if we are going to compete for the MVC title this year.
“The league is going to be tough as usual. A lot of teams will be very good with some excellent baseball players and excellent coaches. It is hard to say who will be the favorites. Dirigo is the defending state champion and coach Ryan Palmer will have them ready to defend that title every game. Then next door to Dirigo is Mountain Valley with coach Steve Lapointe, always fields a competitive team. I know Monmouth has a lot coming back, Spruce Mountain will be tough, Hall Dale, Wiscasset, Madison and Mt. Abram were young and had good solid teams. St. Dom’s will be at the top as usual.
“In Lisbon we are going to ‘live pitch to pitch’ this year. Whatever happens on one pitch happens. We will forget that pitch and focus on the next, not looking into the future or dwelling on the past. Live in the present and take advantage when we can.”
Season opener — April 18 at Monmouth (4:30 p.m.)
Key dates — April 19, at Wiscasset (4:30 p.m.); May 6, home with Wiscasset (4:30 p.m.); May 31, season’s finale at St. Dom’s (4 p.m.).
Softball
Coach — Terri Trudell.
2012 highlights — 9-5 in Mountain Valley Conference. Beat Telstar 4-3 in Western C quarterfinals, lost to Sacopee Valley 7-6 in semifinals.
Personnel lost — Brooke Lawrence (SS), Alexa Harmon (OF), Kimber Morse (P), Haley Eck (C).
Personnel returning — Seniors Bailey Madore (3B), Chantal Bisson (2B); juniors Olivia Harrington (CF), Jenna Clifford (Utl.); sophomores: Arianna Kahler (P/SS), Kailyn Hill (P/1B/outfield/ utl.), Courtney Lawrence (OF), Amanda Hazleton (OF), Lillian Wade (C/INF), Loren Grant (INF).
Newcomers — Michaela Bedell (OF), Mariah Breton.
Coach’s comments — “Preseason is going well. Just got outside last week, which allows more room to work on hitting fielding and outfield.
“Our goal as a team is to make it further than we did last year (second round of playoffs). We expect to be competitive with every team that we play this season.
“Our strength and weakness is being a young team. We have outstanding leadership from our upperclassman whom have been in the playoffs the past three seasons. The league overall is always very competitive. Each team always comes to play and to win.
“The team is excited for the season to start. They are eager to make it further in the playoffs than they did last season.”
Season opener — April 19 at Wiscasset (4:30 p.m.); May 6, home with Wiscasset (4:30 p.m.); May 31, season’s finale at St. Dom’s (4 p.m.).
Key dates — April 19, at Wiscasset (4:30 p.m.); May 31, season’s finale at St. Dom’s (4 p.m.).
Boys tennis
Coach — Paul Giggey.
2012 highlights — 7-6 in MVC regular season, lost to Dirigo 5-0 in Western C quarterfinals.
Personnel lost — Zackary Taylor.
Personnel returning — Seniors Mitch Austin, Zachariah Cribbin, Levi Dussault, Roger Jama; juniors Jacob Bremmer, Josh Broadwater, Mike Jenkins; sophomores Charles Sult, Draven Walker.
Newcomers — Freshmen Nate Bergeron, Max Poulin, Jared Williams.
Coach’s comments — “The start of the season has been slower than usual due to the weather. The nets are up now, so we are trying to get as much court time as possible.
“Our goal is to stress the fundamentals of tennis in hopes of reducing unforced errors. Our strength is in our upper classmen, some of which have played four years of tennis. Our weakness is depth.
“I think the league has some players that will prove their worth in the singles tourney in May. I don’t think any one team is the favorite, but I would give the edge to Hall Dale or St. Dom’s. Dirigo always shows a presence come tourney time.”
Season opener — April 24 at St. Dom’s (4 p.m.).
Key dates — May 1, at Wiscasset (4 p.m.); May 20, season’s finale home with Monmouth, 4 p.m.
Girls tennis
Coach — Georgia Ahlers.
2012 highlights — 8-4 in regular season. Beat St. Dom’s 3-2 in Western C quarterfinals, lost to Hall-Dale 4-1 in semifinals.
Personnel lost — Sarah Giraldo (No. 1 singles) and Nicole Gardner (No. 2 singles).
Personnel returning — Senior Kiaya McBride; juniors Nichole Jones, Tabitha Porter, Sarah Craig, Brianna Sult.
Newcomers — Freshman Lexi McBride.
Coach’s comments — “The preseason has been fun, but difficult in terms of maintaining numbers at practice. All my girls returned who didn’t graduate last year. But one is sick right now and we are waiting to see if she will get to play soon.”
“Right now the girls I have are looking strong. I think Nichole Jones will be our number-one singles player and I am really not sure about the rest. Everyone is close in skills and we are doing challenge matches this week. The team is looking like a total of four for sure. So, I am still recruiting.
“Overall it seemed like Hall Dale was the strongest team last year. I think it is too early to predict what my team can accomplish this year I still have high hopes for recruiting a couple new players. Other than that I think all my returning juniors and senior are looking like awesome tennis players.”
Season opener — April 22, home with Oak Hill (4 p.m.).
Key dates — May 1, home with Wiscasset (4 p.m.); May 17, season’s finale, home with Madison (4 p.m.)

Coach’s comments — “Preseason has gone fairly well. It is always difficult to train a team on a kitty litter track surface … but we have an enthusiastic group and with our outstanding coaching staff we will flourish.
“Our goal is for both teams to repeat as MVC champions and peak at the state meets (Class C and at the Freshmen State Meet).
“Strengths are experienced upperclassmen in many events — who know how to compete at a high level, although we are young in many other events.”
