BRUNSWICK — Three familiar names in Mid-coast region masters swimming — Ronnie Kamphausen, David Vail and Ben Morse — recently achieved high national rankings in two distance swim competitions.

The two events, the Postal One Hour Swim and the Jon Steiner Memorial Pool Mile, are held annually at various sites around the country during the month of January. Distances in the hour swim and times in the mile swim are then centrally tabulated and results published.

Phippsburg’s Kamphausen, swimming in the women’s 75-79 age group, had outstanding performances in both competitions. In the mile swim, her time of 30:57 placed second nationally and her 3,135 yards in the hour swim ranked fourth.

Brunswick’s Vail returned from a year of “semiretirement” to take third place in the men’s 65-69 mile with a time of 23:16.

Morse, also from Brunswick, took fourth in the hour swim for men 40-44, covering a distance of 5,070 yards.

In a large men’s 55-59 age group, Brunswick’s David Bright swam 4,200 yards in the hour swim to best three/fourths of 172 competitors, ranking him 41st.
