TOPSHAM
Police and public works crews shut down Cathance Road in Topsham and Fisher Road in Bowdoinham on Monday after a pickup truck stuck two utility poles, bringing down power lines.
Shortly before 5 p.m., Sgt. Robert Ramsay of the Topsham Police Department said a green 2000 Dodge Ram pickup truck went off the road and took out two utility poles, coming to rest in the area of 308 Cathance Road.
The driver, Bryan Root, 51, of Topsham, was arrested, charged with operating under the influence and possession of marijuana.
Ramsay, still on scene at 6:30 p.m., said police were waiting for Central Maine Power Co. crews to arrive with new poles and expected power would remain out for two to three hours. Cable and telephone services were also affected in the crash, he said. Wires remained on the truck.
According to the CMP website, as of 7 p.m. there were 139 customers in Topsham without power and 20 in Bowdoinham.
Root was not injured, Ramsay said, and a dog that was in the truck also was OK. The truck was totaled.
The road closure prevented motorists from using Cathance or Fisher roads to cross between Middlesex Road in Topsham and Main Street/Route 125 in Bowdoinham. dmoore@timesrecord.com
