That is what the Brunswick High School boys lacrosse team had to wait out after Friday’s season opener was postponed due to inclement weather.

Today at 5: 30 p. m., the Dragons will host the Cony Rams in the makeup, but first things first, as Brunswick traveled to Walton Field on Tuesday to face Edward Little, which was coming off a hard-fought 5-3 loss to rival Lewiston on Saturday.

The opener was well worth the wait as the Dragons scored early and often en route to a 17-6 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference victory to begin 1-0, while the Eddies fell to 0-2.

“We had a very good start, and the kids had good intensity, good composure and forced them to take some penalties,” said Brunswick coach Don Glover, who praised his midfielders, led by Elliot Boyd. “We won 20 of 24 face-offs. Elliot did a good job with the clamps, and Ian ( Schlosser) was doing a good job in the wing play, along with Zach Hamm. Possessing the ball really paid off for us.”

“They’re a fantastic team, well-coached and great in transition, and transition hurt us a lot,” said EL coach Steve Cobb of the Dragons. “We tried to stay positive, but we gave up a lot of goals and it was hard for us to keep up.”

“We knew that we were a good team, but you are never really sure that first game,” said Brunswick’s Ryan Croatti, who scored four of his game-high seven goals in the first quarter as the Dragons claimed a 7-1 lead. “The start was great. We pushed hard and it all came out good.”

Matt Brooks picked up his third first- half assist on Croatti’s sixth goal early in the second quarter for an 8-1 lead for the visitors, and Cam Glover had two goals and a helper in the opening half. Edward Little received a first-half goal each from Bryan Uwaechia and Corey Morin.

The Dragons outshot the Eddies 34-9 in the opening half and led 9-2 at the break.

“This is the first game we had set lines,” said Don Glover. “Ryan played an awesome game, with good placement on his shots. The other guys were very unselfish and it showed.”

Adjusting to grass

During the preseason, Brunswick played all of its games on artificial turf, far different than the bouncy natural surface of Walton Field.

“ We had some troubles with groundballs and adjusting to the bounces, and it took us some time in the second half to figure it out,” said Don Glover.

Cobb made a few changes to begin the second half, a strategy that worked early.

“This is a resilient group, they make adjustments and they have fun every day,” said Cobb after his squad cut its halftime deficit down to 10-4 early in the third quarter on a goal each by Johnny Boyd and Trevor Haley.

“The kids responded to the adjustments we made at the half, and once they won a couple groundballs and started to make some plays, things went a little bit better.”

However, Brunswick reeled off five consecutive goals to put the game out of reach from there.

For Brunswick, Cam Glover had three goals and two assists, Bailey Caparrato two goals, Alex Croatti two helpers, and Hamm, George Rowe and Boyd a goal and an assist each. Brunswick held a 50-31 shots advantage.

Haley added a second goal for EL, with Matt Adams beating Brunswick netminder Chris MrVichin ( 10 saves) for the final goal. In the Eddies’ cage, goaltender Matt Berube made 19 stops.
