AUGUSTA(AP) — A proposed bill would strengthen rules governing compounding pharmacies.
Rep. Sharon Anglin Treat, D-Hallowell, says she proposed her measure to prevent what happened in Massachusetts, where poor oversight and practices at a compounding pharmacy led to a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak that caused more than 50 deaths.
Treat said the state must act because there are no federal rules governing the pharmacies. A public hearing on the measure is set for today.
Treat’s bill would create a new type of license for compounding pharmacies.
