The new town office hours will be Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.; closed Wednesday. The town office will be open through lunch hour. For more information 353-2561.

Yard sale May 18
The Durham Friend’s Woman’s Society annual yard sale will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., rain or shine, at the Quaker Meetinghouse, corner of Route 125 and Quaker Meetinghouse Road. There will be plants, clothing, books, and jumble. There will also be a lunch counter.
Street sweeping
this week
Street sweeping is taking place this week. The goal is to minimize dust, but residents, especially on dead-end subdivision streets, are urged to close their windows when they leave for work in the morning. Masons hosting
bean supper
A bean supper will be held Saturday, May 11, from 4:30-6 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, Route 136 across from the River Park. On the menu are baked beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, pickles, homemade pies. Adults are $7.50, children 5-12 $3, children under 5 free.
Plant sale aids community center
The Eureka Committee has scheduled a plant sale, Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Durham Eureka Community Center. Hanging baskets, annuals, perennials, vegetable and herb plants will be on sale. The Eureka Cafe? features Ernie’s chili, hot dogs, chips, cold drinks and coffee. The group is looking for donations of unusual perennial plants. Call Anita at 353-6217. Proceeds will benefit the Eureka Center.
Special bags for roadside cleanup
Roadside cleanup runs through May 15. Clear, 55-gallon trash bags are available at the Durham Town Office during business hours. The clear trash bags are the only trash bags that Pine Tree Waste will recognize as roadside cleanup. When you have cleaned up a road, leave the bag on the side of the road and Pine Tree Waste will pick up.

Bulky waste day May 18
Bulky waste cleanup is Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Durham Eureka Community Center Field. It is the only bulky waste day of the year. It is for Durham residents only. You must show a driver’s license or a utility bill with a current Durham address. To facilitate offloading, light and small loads will get priority. No commercial waste, no garbage or household trash, no recyclable items, no hazardous wastes and no car batteries.
Accepted items include refrigerators and air conditioners (must be red-tagged to show freon has been removed), appliances, furniture, mattresses and box springs, large metal items, scrap, storm doors, outdoor furniture, large plastic items and toys. Universal wastes/electronics items accepted at no charge are televisions, monitors, computers under 26 inches, fluorescent light bulbs and batteries. Non-alkaline batteries can go in the regular trash. Passenger car/pickup truck tires can be dumped for a fee. Call the Durham Town Office for tire fees at 353-2561. No dump truck tires or loader tires.
Other places to take waste include the Regional Environmental Depot in Lewiston, which on two Saturday mornings a month will accept household cleaners, oil-based paints, solvents, insecticides and gasoline. Contact the Town Office to get a voucher or go to www.avcog.org, or call 783-9186 for more information.
The Freeport Recycling Center will take building debris, brush (no stumps), freon-containing appliances, shingles and oil, all for a fee. For more information and hours, call 865-3740.
Group will pick up bulky waste
The volunteers of the Eureka Committee will pick up bulky waste items that need to go to bulky waste collection site on May 18.
This special pickup is for Durham residents who are physically unable to load their own items and have no way to get their bulky waste items to the site. The committee is asking for a $25 donation for each load. The items must be easily accessible. An inspection of the items has to be done before May 18. Call Anita Sellars at 353-6217.
Fair set for May 18
A spring church fair has been scheduled for Saturday May 18, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at the First Congregational Church. 773 Royalsborough Road, Durham. It will feature local crafters, vendors, farmers, musicians, cheese sale, pie sale, silent auction, raffles and more. Coffee and muffins will be available early, and grilled cheese will be available for lunch. There will be music by Jeff Chipman and Larissa Smith from 1-3.
