Parade, ceremony

to mark Memorial Day

Plans are under way for Freeport’s annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony, Monday, May 27. The parade forms at 9:15 a.m. on Holbrook Street, and begins at 9:30, coming down Main Street to School, down School, and crossing by Hilton Garden to the town park for the ceremony.

As is tradition, the police will be leading the way, and music will be provided by the school bands and choral groups. Scouts are encouraged to be involved. The Freeport Woman’s Club will meet Friday, May 17, for its annual plant auction, at the barn of Helen Rotundo, 3 Old Flying Point Road, Freeport. Following a potluck lunch at noon, plants and outdoor-related items will be auctioned.

Plant, bake sale aids scholarship

The Wolf Neck Club will host a plant and bake sale on Saturday, May 11, from 9-11 a.m., on the lawn at Key Bank, Main Street, Freeport.

A wide selection of locally dug perennials and home-baked goods will be available, with proceeds to benefit a scholarship for a Freeport High School senior.

for school recycling

Ecomaine, a municipally owned and operated nonprofit recycling and waste disposal organization, has announced it is offering $10,000 in recycling grants to schools in its member communities, which include Freeport. There is no age requirement or limit and both private and public schools are eligible. Information about the grants, the application process, and brief case studies of successful programs already working in schools will be provided at a meeting for interested school personnel on Wednesday, May 29, from 3:30-4:30 p.m., at ecomaine’s office, 64 Blueberry Road, Portland.

Budget hearing May 21

The Town Council has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m., to discuss the proposed fiscal year 2014 Operating, Capital and TIF budgets for the town.

Kids sought for boatbuilding project

Freeport Historical Society and Compass Project are looking for eight to 10 Freeport area kids, 12 years or older to spend a week building a replica of a skiff that was used as a work boat at Pettengill Farm. The plan is to use photo documentation from Mildred Pettengill to guide the skiff’s size and lines and use as much lumber as possible from Pettengill Farm. The historical society also is looking for donors to contribute to this project. All donors will have their names on a plaque on the skiff and be invited to the launching party, which includes a “maiden voyage.”

Beacon Hospice

needs volunteers

Beacon Hospice needs volunteers to visit patients and families in the Freeport, Brunswick and Bath areas. The organization is about to begin their spring hospice volunteer training, a seven-week free training course to prepare those interested in visiting terminally ill patients and their families living at home or in facilities. Time and location of training is flexible and built around the needs of the volunteer. References, a background check and medical screenings are required. Wilbur’s of Maine celebrating 30th

Wilbur’s of Maine will mark its 30th anniversary on Saturday, May 18, with an open house from 2-5 p.m. Owners Tom and Catherine Carty-Wilbur will be on hand, and there will be refreshments, live music and, of course, chocolate. Wilbur the Moose will be here for photos and there will be plenty of face painting and other kids activities. The event is free.

Sign up for soccer

The Freeport United Travel Soccer Club sign-ups for new and returning players have been scheduled for Wednesday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m., at the Hunter Road Field Complex. Rain dates are May 14 and 15.

The club provides children from Freeport, Durham and Pownal the opportunity to play competitive youth soccer in a league with similar clubs in the Casco Bay and mid-coast regions (games are usually within 45 minutes of Freeport).

Freeport United’s goal is to support the development of skillful and intelligent soccer players, to foster joy in playing soccer and to encourage players to perform to the best of their abilities. Freeport United Teams are open to boys and girls from under-9 to under-14 age groups. Players participate on the age-appropriate team based on U.S. Youth Soccer age standards (as of Aug. 1, 2013).

There will be pre-registration and player evaluation sessions so that parents and players can meet club officials and team coaches. Attending a player evaluation is strongly encouraged for both new and returning players.

Library news and notes

The GWC (Giving Children Warmth) program will be making blankets for children in Afghanistan by knitting squares and sewing them together. The group meets on Mondays from 2:45-4 p.m. to teach volunteers from age 11 through adult to knit.

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.

The library will present Tech Talk: Be an Informed Utility Consumer on Wednesday, May 8, from 2-3 p.m. Wayne Jortner and Eric Bryant, Freeport residents and senior counsels for Maine’s Public Advocate Office, will speak about available providers and rates for electricity, local and long-distance telephone service, bundled plans, VOIP, cell phone and internet.

Freeport Yoga Co. will present “Yoga for Kids” on Thursday, May 9 at 10 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their toddler or preschooler for morning yoga that includes stretching, breathing and fun.

The Thursday midday movie on May 16 at 1 p.m. will be “Argo.” This film is rated R for language and some violent images.
