’Tis the Season

Signs of life, literally and figuratively, mean the summer season is fast approaching. Reinhard Farm of Kimball Corner (they are located just beyond the corner of Lake House Road and King Hill Road) opened its doors the day before Mother’s Day as has become their tradition. I know because my children look forward to walking down there with their wagon and loading up on flowers and plants to kick off the gardens. They love going in and taking advantage of the refreshments always available there. If you have never been to Reinhard, you should go out of your way to find it sometime. It is the classic small-town family owned business. They make you feel welcome, always have a treat for you and a weekly drawing for free plants. Not to mention, their flowers are amazing. May always brings the Songo River Queen to the lake, and welcomes back the ice cream and seasonal restaurants and shops. Naples comes to life that’s for sure, and we welcome the easier living after the cold winter we have had.

Naples Makes the News

Our town made WCSH news today. The newscast reported on the delays motorists would be experiencing as a result of the Causeway Project’s construction company having to re-pave the road. The original paving job did not live up to standards. Congratulations to whoever it was who discovered that. I would rather be stuck in traffic than realize the road was crumbling in six months. Today, I was stuck for about 10 minutes, which was not too tragic. All I have to do is remember that the days of waiting for the bridge to open and close are over forever. Swim Registration

Naples Recreation is offering summer swim lessons at the Naples Town Beach.

Lessons are for children 3 years of age (when class starts) and up. There will be two sessions, each session is three weeks long, with a one week break in the middle. The first session will run from July 1-19. The second session will run from July 29 until Aug. 16. Swim lessons will start at 9 a.m. and times are based on the level your child is in.

The registration for swim lessons will be on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Naples Town Office. The cost of each session for Naples residents is $35 for a single child and $60 for siblings. The cost for non-residents is $45 for a single child and $80 for siblings. Registrations after 4 p.m. on June 21 will pay a $20 late fee. Limited space is available. Registrations will not be taken before the registration date. In addition to our regular day swim classes, we will be offering three swim classes for the first session in the evenings starting at 5 p.m. These classes will only run if they have enough participants.

Youth Football

Golf Outing

The Lake Region Youth Football League is holding its 11th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8, at the Naples Golf and Country Club with a 2 p.m. shotgun start. Following the event will be a cookout where prizes will be awarded. Everyone who signs up will have a chance to win one of the two door prizes, which are a cord of wood donated by Reinhard Excavation and a cord of wood donated by Marston Tree Service. All proceeds will be used to replace older football equipment with new football equipment. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.townofnaples.org or picked up at the Naples Town Hall. For more information, contact Harvey Price Jr. at 693-6364 or 595-0602.

Fundraising Events

The two events I know about actually sound like FUN-raising to me! Heather Hanson and the crew at Coldwell Banker Lakes Region Properties are holding their annual yard sale right outside their offices at 692 Roosevelt Trail in Naples on Memorial Day weekend, May 25 and 26. Do some spring cleaning this weekend and then donate your gently used items to this great event benefiting the American Cancer Society. Heather’s team, Angels of Hope, holds this yard sale every year as their main fundraiser for their Relay for Life team. Heather and her team have been participating in the Relay for Life since 2004. Among other reasons for the team’s participation in this event is the fact that Heather’s daughter, Shannon, 10, is an eight-year survivor of AML, a form of leukemia. The Relay for Life of Sebago Lakes Region is being held at the Windham High School track, Saturday, June 29, at 6 p.m. to Sunday, June 30, at 6 a.m. For more information, go to www.relayforlife.org/sebagolakesme. You can drop off your donations to her office or call to arrange for a pick-up at 693-7000 and ask for Heather.

Tracy Andrews will be heading up the Italian Dinner Benefit for Relay for Life on the Songo River Queen on Saturday, June 22, from 5-8 p.m. The menu will feature an Italian Roast Beef Carving Station (roast beef donated by Naples-own Lake Region Caterers, Inc.) and several yummy Italian specialty dishes and desserts. Tickets are $15 up to 48 hours in advance, and $20 at the door. Entertainment is also included on the boat. Contact Tracy at 693-3056 or email her at [email protected].

Shannon Hanson, an 8-year leukemia survivor, posing with her friend Mackenzie Siebert, left, attend last year’s Relay for Life at Windham High School. Their mother, Heather Hanson, is raising money for the upcoming Relay.
Naples has a new amphitheatre, located on the Causeway next to the new bridge. Workers planted trees, shrubs and installed sod on Monday.
