BRUNSWICK
The MPA Singles Tennis Qualifiers were held around the state with a number of Midcoast region players in action.
Those who advanced are scheduled to compete in the MPA Singles Championships, May 25, 27 and 29 at Lewiston High School and Bate College.
Region 3
The girls were played at the Mt. Ararat High School courts with Brunswick, Morse and Mt. Ararat among the schools competing.
Top-seeded (and defending champion) Maisie Silverman qualified with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Morse’s Elena Valino of Morse. Valino had beaten Samantha Lamoreaux of Erskine 8-2.
Ali Stankiewicz, the No. 5 seed from Brunswick, advanced by beating Amy Segars of Mt. Ararat 8-1 in the first round and Lindsey Joyce of Oceanside 6-1, 6-1 in the qualifying round.
Christina Levesque of Mt. Ararat also advanced via an 8- 0 win over Mikayla Bolduc of Skowhegan and a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Kaylee Bates of Messalonskee.
Allison Melcher of Mt. Ararat won via a walkover over Hannah Olsen of Camden Hills, but lost to Tiffany Suchanek of Waterville, 6-0, 6- 0. Leah Soloway of Brunswick lost to sixthranked Olivia Joyce of Waterville 8-1.
The boys were played at Buker Courts in Augusta with Morse’s Sam Leeman advancing to state play.
Leeman scored an 8-0 firstround win over Patrick Poirier of Skowhegan and toppled Daniel Halzworth of Erskine Academy 6-0, 6-0 in the Qualifying Round.
Mt. Ararat’s Trevor Mayo beat Alex Roberts of Gardiner 8-4 in the first round, but lost to Brandon Blake of Lincoln Academy 6-2, 6-0.
Also, Keegan Drouin of Morse lost to Ilyas Khan of Waterville 8-3 in the first round, and Jimmy Kenyon of Brunswick fell to Sam Schwehm of Boothbay 8-6 in the first round.
In preliminary round action, Parit Chancherngpanich of Mt. Ararat fell to Chase Whittier of Cony 9-7.
Joel Soloway of Brunswick beat Brandon Deas of Winslow 8-1 in the prelim and lost to Zach Disch of Waterville 8-4 in the first round.
Max Johnstone of Mt. Ararat blanked Aaron Smelcher of Medomak Valley 8-0 in prelim play, but fell to Zhong McClure of Erskine 8-0 in the first round.
Region 5
The boys were held at Waynflete School with Freeport among the schools competing.
Nathan Smail of Freeport defeated Andrew Lamsen of Westbrook by default, but lost to 10th-ranked Benjamin Shapiro 6-0, 6-0 in the qualifying round.
Also, teammate Caleb Abbott lost to 11th-ranked Andrew Lamonica of York 8-1 in the first round.
The girls played at Deering, with Laura Bielfeldt and Katie McClelland of Freeport in action.
Bielfeldt opened with a walkover win over Olivia Cavalieri of York, and lost to No. 2 Julia Brogan of Falmouth 6- 1, 6-1.
In first-round action, McClelland lost to Michelle Cote of Biddeford 8-4.
