On Saturday, May 11, the Windham Hill United Church of Christ held its semi-annual electronic recycling event in the parking lot of the Windham Mall.
“It’s always a great event,” said Judy Eycleshymer, director of the event and a church trustee. “We usually collect 15 tons of material from each event, which averages two full tractor trailer trucks.”
The event, started in 2008, raises funds for various church missions and programs by asking people to make a donation of $5 to $50 dollars per item they are bring to recyce. On average, the event sees 300 vehicles in six hours.
“Windham doesn’t have a recycling program, but most other towns with recycling centers charge $10-$20 per item,” said Eycleshymer. “We are asking for $5 per item or an entire truck load for $50. That’s a huge savings.”
Items dropped off included television sets, computer monitors and hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless phones, cell phones, VCRs, DVDs and audio equipment. Ewaste Maine was on hand to collect and dispose of the donations.
“Ewaste always partners with us,” said Eycleshmyer. “They are an eco-friendly recycling company and they always do a great job helping us.”
The next electronic recycling event will be held in September. For more information visit www.windhamhillucc.org or www.ewastemaine.com.
