The Freeport High School boys lacrosse team came into Monday’s contest with 6-3 Wells looking to repeat the success of its first win, a 9-7 victory over Windham on Friday.

Despite a 1-7 record coming into the “home” game at Bowdoin’s College Ryan Field (moved due to unplayable field conditions at Freeport), the Falcons are thinking playoffs.

The shorthanded Falcons did everything to stay with the physical Warriors before falling flat in the fourth quarter of a 15-10 loss, dropping Freeport to 1-8 with a visit to Lake Region slated for Wednesday.

“They are looking for the playoffs, something we really want for the seniors, and if we can tune it up against Lake Region, and more so against York (Friday at home), we can get in, then you never know,” said Freeport coach Geoff Arris.

After falling behind 2-0 in the game’s first 27 seconds against Wells (7-3), the Falcons began to click on both ends of the field. Freeport goaltender Zac Wogan had 11 saves in the first half, and the Falcons used a 6-2 run to take a 6-4 lead to the break.

Clayton Morrison was the key on offense, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists, while Galen Simmons and Sam Wogan picked up one goal each in the opening stanza.

“We meshed together well in the first half, the defense was talking and on offense we were clicking,” said Morrison. “We are trying to work as a team the whole way through. The win kept us up, and we were looking forward to this next game after having been down the whole season. Wells played a good game, but we are a contender and we can play.”

“I was pumped and happy with what we had in the first half, with our defense talking a lot and making the plays,” said Arris.

Falcons tire

With two Freeport starters out due to academic ineligibility, Wells took over in the third quarter, scoring three consecutive goals for a 7-6 lead. Brandon Morton got the Warriors going, finishing off a pass from Ryan Marsh, and one goal each by Alex McCormack and Jake Godin put Wells in the lead.

Freeport found its second wind, scoring twice in the final minute of the third frame (goal each from Sam Wogan and Morrison), with Wells picking up a score from game-long standout Drew Shelley for an 8-8 stalemate heading to the fourth quarter.

Wells rediscovered its third quarter flow in the fourth. Shelley and Marsh took turns on faceoffs as the Warriors held a 22-6 advantage overall, including a 9-1 edge in the final frame.

Spencer Sibley put Wells ahead to stay with 9:38 remaining, and two goals by Morton and one from Sibley made for a 12-8 contest with 4:34 remaining.

“Clayton and Griff (Breer) ran the entire the game, so by the fourth quarter they were done,” said Arris of his tiring squad, which had one more push left.

Goals by Simmons and Sam Wogan 52 seconds apart made for a 12-10 game with 2:07 left, but Wells closed the game on a three-goal run to complete the 15-10 victory.

“When we had possession, we worked the ball well, something I was happy with,” said Arris.

Sibley led Wells with five goals and two assists, with Morton chipping in four goals (all in the second half) and Shelley three goals and two helpers. Godin added two goals and Marsh dished out a pair of assists.

Morrison paced the Falcons with five goals and two assists, followed by Sam Wogan with three goals and Simmons with two goals and one assist. Breer and Eli Fox picked up one helper each.

In goal, Zac Wogan had 23 saves, while Wells netminder Elias McKaig turned aside 12 shots. The Warriors held a 52-33 shots advantage. Wells was 4-of-7 with the man advantage, while Freeport finished 3-of-7.
