A sailboat being demolished with a torch caught fire Tuesday afternoon on Upper Minott Road.
“Two gentlemen were cutting the front section off a salvaged boat that the owner was trying to get rid of,” Pownal Fire Chief Jessie Peters said.
Peters said the men were cutting the steel hull of the boat, which Peters estimated was more than 30 feet long, when the craft’s foam insulation and wood caught fire and burned.
The boat was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived around 12:30 p.m., Peters said. It was knocked down within 15 minutes, and the scene was cleared before 3 p.m.
Firefighter crews from Freeport and Durham also responded, and North Yarmouth provided station coverage.
The boat was destroyed, Peters said. No injuries were reported.
