LA CROSSE, Wis. — Bowdoin College men’s outdoor track athletes Coby Horowitz and Jacob Ellis rounded out a standout weekend by the Polar Bears as both claimed All-American honors during the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday.
Horowitz, a junior, added to his impressive resume with a pair of top-eight finishes in the 1500 meters and 5K races, making him a three-season All-American this year after earning the prestigious status in both cross country and indoor track. Ellis, a freshman, capped his sensational rookie campaign with a fifthplace showing in the 800 meters.
Combined with All-American performances by both Erin Silva (women’s pole vault) and Katherine Harmon (women’s hammer throw), all four Bowdoin qualifiers for the NCAA Championship will be returning home with hardware in the school’s most successful performance at outdoor nationals in over two decades.
Horowitz entered the 1500 seeded fifth and improved his position one spot by claiming fourth overall in a time of 3:49.19, three seconds off the winning pace.
Just a short time later, he returned for the grueling 5K race and, despite entering the event seeded 17th, posted an eighth-place showing in 14:34.09 to take his second All- American finish of the afternoon.
Horowitz has earned All- American honors in each of the last six seasons and is the first Bowdoin track athlete in the coach Peter Slovenski-era to earn All-American in two different events at the same NCAA Championship.
Ellis equally rose to the occasion after entering the championships with the 11th-best time in the nation. His time of 1:51.68 was good enough for fifth, an All-American honor, and was less than two seconds off the winning time. Ellis is the first Bowdoin freshman to net All-American recognition since Delia Van Loenen in the heptathlon in 1998. His preliminary qualifying time of 1:51.50 on Friday was the secondfastest time in school history.
With the combined scores of Ellis and Horowitz, the Bowdoin men finished 22nd overall. The Polar Bear women finished 61st.
On Friday, junior hammer thrower Harmon, after entering the competition seeded 13th, threw a distance of 172- 06 to take eighth and earn her first All-American award. The Auburn native broke the school mark on her second throw of the day, surpassing the mark of 172-04 formerly held by Louise Duffus.
Harmon joins the sophomore Silva, who earned a seventh place and All-American status in the pole vault on Thursday. Silva set a school record when she cleared 12- 01.75 at the national meet. It is the first All-American award for the sophomore from Westborough, Mass.
She is the first female pole vaulter in Bowdoin history to collect All-American honors and is the first Bowdoin pole vaulter to be All-American since Pat Ronan in 1985.
