AUGUSTA (AP) — Two members of the Maine National Guard have received the highest noncombat award for valor for rescuing two people from an overturned burning car.
Sgt. Mark Connor of Lewiston and Sgt. 1st Class Joel Carver of Clinton were awarded the Soldier’s Medal on Monday in a State House ceremony. The awards were presented by Brig. Gen. James Campbell, the guard’s adjutant general, and first lady Ann LePage.
The Sun Journal reported that Connor and Carver noticed an overturned car off an interstate highway in 2011 in North Carolina while on their way to a training exercise at Camp Lejeune.
Connor said a man and woman were trapped inside and the undercarriage of the car was on fire, so they broke the car windows and brought them to safety.
