One hundred nineteen students will be receiving oneweek scholarships to attend a camp this summer, thanks to the generous support of the Bath Elementary PTA, the Davenport Foundation, and many area camps, as well as the efforts of the Dike-Newell guidance counselor, Gretchen Brinkler and Suzanne Paule at Fisher-Mitchell.

This is the fifth year of the program, which has grown from 39 students receiving a one-week scholarship in 2009 to this year’s total of 119 students.

This year we received 51 donated weeks from eight different camp programs, including the Maine Maritime Museum Kennebec Explorer’s program, Riverview Foundation Day camp, YMCA day and gymnastics camps, Bath Recreation and Kids Down Under Day Camp.

Summer camp experiences allow children to grow, learn and have fun interacting with other children. The experience provides kids with the opportunity to interact with positive adult role models and participate in activities outside of their family.

Last year was the first camp experience for more than 50 percent of the students who attended camp. Many others have only attended through the support of this program.

We hope to never have to turn away a request for a child to attend a summer camp program, and will continue to advocate for funding to support this wonderful program.
