FALMOUTH — Falmouth High baseball coach Kevin Winship had a plan in place for a bid to repeat as Class B state champion.

The plan: Start ace Thomas Fortier in the Western Maine final Tuesday, then, if the Yachtsmen advanced, come back with Fortier for Saturday’s state title game.
Now it’s time for Plan B.

Flood-level rain drowned any chance of the baseball starting pitchers going in both the regional and state finals bcause Tuesday’s baseball and softball games were postponed.

“If we had been able to play Tuesday and fortunate enough to get past York in that game, then I could have pitched my No. 1 in both the regional and state finals,” Winship said.

If a baseball pitcher throws more than three innings, he must have three days of rest before he can pitch again, so only pitchers who work three innings or less in a regional final also would be able to pitch in the state final.

Most softball teams rely on one primary starting pitcher throughout the season, making Tuesday’s rainouts less impactful.

The decision to postpone Tuesday’s games was made early in the day by the Maine Principals’ Association.

The Western Class B softball and baseball finals at St. Joseph’s College will now be played Wednesday, with the Western Class A finals. The Western Class C finals, which were supposed to be played Wednesday, were pushed back to Thursday, and the Class D finals were moved from Tuesday to Thursday.

“We had some conflicts with senior activities and graduations, so moving the B games to Thursday proved to be a conflict,” said the MPA assistant executive director, Mike Burnham. “We were very fortunate we didn’t run into the same conflicts with the Class C schools. They were all very accommodating and very gracious.”

Falmouth, the No. 2 seed in Western Class B, is scheduled to face No. 5 York at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday. Winship said Fortier will start that game. If the Yachtsmen beat York for a second time this season, Connor Murphy would get the start in the state championship game. Murphy defeated Morse 2-1 in the regional semifinals.

“I go with the philosophy you have to win the first to get to the next. It’s Thomas’ turn to pitch and Thomas is going to pitch,” Winship said.

“At least everybody is in the same boat.”

In Eastern Maine, the Class B and D finals were rescheduled for Thursday.

Wednesday’s schedule at St. Joseph’s features nearly simultaneous baseball and softball doubleheaders.

Baseball gets under way first with the Class A final between No. 2 Marshwood (16-2) and No. 4 Westbrook (15-3) at 3 p.m.

The Class B softball final between No. 4 Greely (14-4) and No. 6 Gray-New Gloucester (14-5) starts at 3:30 p.m., with the Western Class A matchup between No. 1 Scarborough (17-1) and No. 3 Sanford (13-5) to follow at 7.

Scarborough and Sanford have met twice this season. Sanford won the regular-season game 3-2 in eight innings, handing Scarborough its only loss. In the SMAA semifinals (which is considered an exhibition), Scarborough won, 1-0.

The schedule for the regional lacrosse finals was unaffected by Tuesday’s rain. All eight finals are still scheduled for Wednesday.
