The Coastal Conservation Association Maine and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute are collaborating on a data collection program called “Snap-A-Striper,” aimed at compiling photos and valuable information from live release and legally kept striped bass caught in Maine waters.
When an angler catches a striped bass of any size, he quickly fills in the required information on a card which also serves as an accurate fish ruler, and photographs the fish with the card next to it. The fish is then released or harvested, and the photograph is emailed to [email protected].
Striped bass are an important component of the recreational fishery in coastal Maine. But catches have declined dramatically in recent years without a clear understanding of all the contributing factors.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
