BATH — Organizers of the reconstruction of the ship Virginia, the 51 foot pinnace built by colonists at Popham Beach in 1608, report progress on the project.

Master Shipwright Rob Stevens and a host of volunteers from the Mid-coast have given shape to the ship in a boat shed behind the Bath Freight Shed on the Kennebec River.

Virginia now has its keel, 22 frames, a stern post a stem and dead wood. This summer, crews will be faring the frames making Virginia ready for the keelson and planking.

Meanwhile, the board of directors of Maine’s First Ship, the nonprofit organization overseeing the project, announced a dinner at Maxwell’s Restaurant in Bath last month attracted more than 100 participants and raised $4,000.

New pledges and donations to the organization, include a commitment of $15,000 from First Federal Savings over three years, and a gift of $2,000 from the Maine Antique Dealers Associations. The Bath Savings Institutions also contributed another $5,000 last month, bringing its total contribution to the project to more than $35,000.
