TAMPA, Fla. – New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took another stride in his comeback from a broken left ankle by running outdoors for the first time in two months.

Jeter started the running program Thursday at Steinbrenner Field and called it “the last step” before playing in minor league games. He hopes to run the bases soon.

“Everything is good,” Jeter said. “No problems whatsoever. I’ve done everything else. It’s a constant progression.”

There’s no date yet for Jeter to begin a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment.

“As soon as I can get out there, I’ll get out there,” Jeter said. “We haven’t got that far yet.”

ROCKIES: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said his broken rib is healing and he hopes to return in time to help his team make a run at an NL West title.

Tulowitzki said he’s begun some light throwing and the injury feels more like a “bruise” after two weeks on the disabled list. He was injured June 13 diving for a ball against Washington and is projected to miss 4 to 6 weeks.

“I’ve been able to play some light catch and trying to keep my conditioning up,” he said. “I haven’t been able to swing and do stuff like that. That would be the next step at some point and time, but no rush. When I’m ready, I’m ready. I don’t know what that timetable will be.”

Colorado brought infielder Reid Brignac back to the organization, with a minor league deal.

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer lined a single to center in the second inning against the New York Mets, extending his hitting streak to a franchise-record 24 games.

NATIONALS: Outfielder Bryce Harper moved up a level in his injury rehabilitation assignment, joining Double-A Harrisburg for a game at Bowie, Md.

Harper hasn’t played for Washington since May 26 and was put on the disabled list June 2 with bursitis in his left knee.

In two games with Class A Potomac, Harper went 2 for 4 with a double, home run, a walk and run over eight innings. He played three innings in left field Tuesday and was the designated hitter Wednesday due to the possibility of rain.

DARREN DAULTON, a former All-Star catcher, has been diagnosed with two brain tumors and will undergo surgery next week.

Daulton, who played 14½ of his 15 seasons for Philadelphia, has hosted “Talking Baseball with Dutch” at 97.5 The Fanatic the last four years.

Daulton, after not feeling well the past two weeks, saw a doctor who made the discovery.

INDIANS: Chris Perez was activated from the 15-day disabled list and immediately will resume his role as closer.

Perez was sidelined May 27 with right shoulder soreness. While he was out, he and his wife were charged with misdemeanor drug possession after marijuana was mailed to their Ohio home in their dog’s name.

ORIOLES: Pitcher Freddy Garcia, 37, re-signed and agreed to go to the minors to remain with the team.

Garcia signed a minor league contract Monday after he was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, an assignment he had the right to refuse if he wanted to become a free agent instead.
