CUMBERLAND — Traffic is moving again after a minor traffic accident in the northbound lane of Interstate 295 in Cumberland caused traffic to back up to Tukey’s Bridge in Portland during the afternoon rush-hour commute.

State Police Trooper Lawrence Rose said a car whose driver apparently slowed down to avoid hitting a tractor-trailer that had jack-knifed was rear-ended by another vehicle at about 4:08 p.m.

Though the crash was minor, it forced police to close one lane of traffic on the northbound side, near the new Yarmouth exit – Exit 15.

Rose said that when he arrived the tractor-trailer had left the scene, but traffic was backed up to Tukey’s Bridge in Portland – a distance of about five miles.

“Had this happened at any other time of day, there would have been far less of an impact on traffic,” Rose said.

Both northbound lanes were open to traffic by 4:45 p.m.
