CALAIS (AP) — State police say a shooting in the eastern Maine town of Calais left one man dead and a woman and baby wounded.

Police said the shooting Wednesday evening was an act of domestic violence.

They said two officers shot and killed Daniel Pinney, 26, shortly after arriving at a home on Main Street. They said Pinney had shot Megan Sherrard, 21, and their 6- week-old son, Luca. The woman was fleeing with her son when the officers arrived.

Sherrard is undergoing treatment for serious gunshot wounds at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. The baby also was being treated for a gunshot wound to the foot.

A police officer was grazed by a bullet but is expected to make a full recovery.

Investigators said Sherrard had a doctor’s appointment for the baby, but never showed up. Her car was found in the doctor’s parking lot in Calais by her father Wednesday afternoon. He contacted police because he was concerned for her safety.

Investigators say it appears Pinney, who had been out on bail stemming from a May 18 charge of criminal threatening involving Sherrard, confronted her in the parking lot and forced her to return with him to his house. He was not to have had any contact with her as a condition of his bail.
