It was a bright, warm evening at Wiscasset Speedway last Saturday.

The Amsoil Nelcar Legends made their third appearance out of four scheduled this season. Also on the roster were Strictly Street, Late Model Sportsman, and an Outlaw Mini race.

First up was the flex race, the Amsoil Nelcar Legends 25-lap feature. Coming into the race was points leader Ryan Hammar. Behind him in second place in point position was Mathew Bourgoine. Only 10 points separated the two.

Starting in the pole position in the Legends race was Wyatt Alexander.

There were numerous battles for position until a caution was thrown in lap 12 due to a mechanical problem on the track.

Alexander pulled ahead on the restart, but Bourgoine faltered, allowing Reid Lanpher to slide into second. By lap 14, Bourgoine had regained his momentum and he passed Lanpher to retake second. The second caution of the race came on lap 18 when a car spun.

When the action resumed, Lanpher passed Alexander on the inside of turn two on lap 22. On the last lap, Bourgoine had a burst of speed to regain second. Race leaders went past the checkered in that order. Lanpher took the win with Bourgoine second and Alexander third.

Lanpher said in Victory Lane, “Started off the year really, really good. Then we had a streak of bad luck … today we got lucky with the restarts and had a good day.”

Next on the track was the Strictly Street division. This 20-lap feature was action packed. Starting in the pole position was Corey Morgan, followed by Gerry Freve and Guy Childs.

Morgan took an early lead and had a 10-car length lead by lap six, when a caution was thrown.

A battle was waged for third place with Arrowsic’s Tasha Dyer, while Freve maintained his second-place position. Dyer finally had an opening on lap 19 when she passed Childs and raced for second along the top of the track. Dyer placed second at the finish with Freve third.

Morgan wound up first after running away with the lead for the entire race.

The Late Model Sportsman 35-lap feature was next. Starting in the pole position was Allan Moeller Sr., of Wiscasset followed by Wiscasset’s Nick Hinkley and Alex Waltz.

Lap one saw a caution when John Rideout attempted to pass Waltz for third. Rideout lost control and collected Nick Reno of West Bath.

Reno had to pit, but was able to tear off the damaged metal and get back on the track.

Lap five saw Shane Lane gain momentum as he passed Waltz on the outside of turn three. Lap 19 came, and Lane passed on the outside of turn three. On lap 32, Moeller and Lane scraped together, and Moeller spun out.

When racing action resumed, Will Collins moved to the inside and moved into second, dropping Hinkley to third. On lap 34, Collins passed Lane on the inside of turn two. Race leaders remained the same until the checkered. In Victory Lane, Collins said, “It was a lucky break, and that was it. I’d like to thank my father and family.”

Lane was second and Hinkley third.

Last on the schedule was the Outlaw Mini 35-lap feature.

Starting in the pole position was Brent Roy, followed by George Fortin and Richmond’s Nate Tribbett.

By lap seven Fortin had a commanding lead. In turn three Tribbet moved up to pass Roy, and the two scraped together. Roy spun and went into the wall. Tribbet went off the track. Jimmy Childs, Tim Collins, Jeff Prindall and Rob Greenleaf were all caught in the melee. The restart saw Fortin in the lead with Collins second and Prindall third.

Prindall dropped back and Chris Morris took third. Race leaders remained the same until the conclusion of the race: Fortin first, Collins second and Morris third.

Wiscasset Speedway resumes this upcoming Saturday with its group one lineup of divisions: Prostock, Super Stock, New England 4-cylinder Prostock and Thunder 4. The flex race of the week will be a 25-lap Outlaw Mini race.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m., grandstands at 4 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and children ages seven and older. Children six and under are free. For more information, go to www.wiscassetspeedway.com
