BATH — Judd Ingersoll passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013, with his family around him. He was 85 years old and had spent 59 years beside his companion and the love of his life, Joan.

Justin L. Ingersoll, Jr., Senior Chief United States Navy, was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on March 1, 1928, to Justin L. Ingersoll Sr. and Amanda Callahan Ingersoll. He worked in Gloucester when he was young, was an altar boy at St Ann’s Church in Gloucester and active in sports in high school, especially football. He joined the U.S. Navy, where he completed high school, in 1946, but was later made an honorary member of the Morse High School class of 1949, whose reunions he never missed.

Before retiring from the Navy in 1966 as a Senior Chief, Judd served all over the world as a radar man aboard several ships; one of his favorites was the Agerholm which had been built in Bath. He and Joan enjoyed several ship reunions in recent years, including one held in Bath two years ago where the shipmates toured BIW.

Beginning a second career in 1966 Judd worked at the BIW first as an electrician and later as the supervisor in the drafting pool. In those years he was active in the Bath Lodge of the Elks serving in leadership roles too many to count, but including State President and National Board of Ritualistic Coaches. Whether the task was putting flags out at the cemetery, building a new roof for the Elmhurst Camp or filling boxes for the Santa Fund, he was generous with his skills and his time. Those years were also filled with family camping trips to Pemaquid and then Small Point and then happy years spent at the Small Point Cottage. He and Joan opened their hearts and their home to many in the city of Bath: building their own family, making a “second home” for others or just taking in some who needed a place to stay, their doors have always been open. Then came grandchildren and great-grandchildren that filled the house once again.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three children: John Ingersoll who lives in Warrenton, Virginia with his wife Donna, Jane Gammon who lives in Richmond with her husband Ricky and Julie Ingersoll, Ph.D., who lives in Jacksonville, Florida. He leaves five grandchildren (Travis, Courtney and Deuce, Jessica and Monica), seven great-grandchildren and Jazzy, the dog he held every night.

His was a long and rich life but just not long enough for those of us whom he leaves.

Services will be held at Grade Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 13, 2013, with a visitation at 1:00 and a funeral at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Grace Episcopal Church in Bath or the Brunswick Humane Society.
