AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s state utilities regulators have started a process to allow additional bidders compete for an offshore wind project contract.

Gov. Paul LePage’s administration said Wednesday that the Maine Public Utilities Commission released the request for proposals on Tuesday, giving entities until Sept. 1 to submit their application.

The announcement comes after lawmakers approved legislation backed by LePage to reopen the competition to let the University of Maine compete.

Norwegian energy company Statoil and the PUC agreed to terms in January for the $120 million project to put four, three-megawatt wind turbines 12 miles off the coast on floating spar-buoy structures tethered to the seabed.
