PORTLAND — Mike Hill of Topsham and Helen Boucher of Lewiston captured singles titles at the 41st annual MTA Championships, played this past weekend at the Waynflete Sports Complex.
The tournament was sanctioned as a double major by the Maine Tennis Association.
The top-seeded Hill, a three time interscholastic champion and a recent Brown University net star, successfully defended the title he captured in 2012 by routing unseeded Justin Tardif, 6-0, 6-0, in the men’s open championship match.
Tardif had eliminated both second-seeded Brian Mavor and third-rated Marius King en route to his berth in the final.
Boucher, the second seed and a psychology professor at Bates College, beat fourth-seeded Natalie Egbert of Gorham, 6-1, 6-3 in the women’s open final.
Other winners in the three-day event were — Hugo Robinson and Connor McNeish in men’s open doubles; Andrea Georgian and Donna Dwyer in women’s open doubles; Josh Pendergast in men’s 35+ singles; Leo Scheidl in men’s 45+ singles; and Art Goldsmith in men’s 55+ singles.
