FREEPORT – Orvis, a family-owned retail and mail-order business specializing in high-end fly-fishing, hunting and sporting goods, will join Beansprouts, a child care center, as two of the latest businesses to open in Freeport this summer.
Undaunted by the shadow of L.L. Bean, Orvis will open at 24 Bow St., the former home of a Brooks Brothers outlet. The company is primarily known for fly fishing rods and was founded in Manchester, Vt., in 1856 by Charles F. Orvis to sell fishing tackle. It has the distinction of being the oldest mail-order retailer in the United States, according to information from its website.
Orvis, which plans to open later this month, also operates an outlet in Kittery.
“Freeport has a cluster effect and there is room for Orvis alongside L.L. Bean,” said Keith McBride, Freeport economic development executive director. “Competition is healthy.”
Beansprouts Early Learning Childcare Center, the brainchild of Yarmouth resident Angela Garrison, provides an all-organic, chemical-free day care center for children from infants to pre-kindergarten. According to information supplied by Garrison, all furnishings and supplies will be environmentally friendly whenever possible. Garrison has hired Tina Daigle, who holds a doctorate in early childhood education, as the director at the center, located 192 Lower Main St.
Beansprouts will open July 29.
The two new businesses join the recently opened Tuscan Brick Oven Bistro, The Wishful Moon and the recently re-opened Jameson Tavern as the latest Freeport establishments.
