Swango Farm in Woolwich and Bessie’s Farm Goods in Freeport are participating in the statewide Open Farm Day, on Sunday.

Open Farm Day is an annual adventure for families, as farmers open their gates and give people the opportunity to learn about agriculture. Farms will put on demonstrations and displays, and have farm-raised products for sale. Animals can be seen, and sometimes petted.

Swango Farm is located at 112 Swango Driveway, just off River Road near the Dresden town line. It consists of 55 acres of fields, woods and wetlands, directly on Merrymeeting Bay.

Joe and Jim Economou, who have owned Swango Farm since 1979, produce 10 acres of vegetables, herbs and flowers, and sell them at their West Bath farm stand. The Economous also raise beef, pigs, chickens and turkeys.

Swango Farm is a community resource, existing through a conservation easement that preserves it in perpetuity for farming use only. The Economous practice sustainable farming methods, and do not use dangerous pesticides.

Bessie’s Farm Goods, located at 33 Litchfield Road, is open on Open Farm Day for the second season. Last year, owners Deede Montgomery and Kathy Hyde welcomed a big crowd.

Montgomery and Hyde, who built the farm themselves in 2009, raise llamas, alpacas and goats.

“We’re a fiber farm,” Hyde said, “so we’ll be doing some fiber-related activities. “People want to see the animals. It’s been hot, so they’ll probably be in the barns unless it cools down.”

Both Montgomery and Hyde once taught school, and look forward to seeing the children.

“It’s always fun to show kids stuff,” Hyde said.

Some farms offers barn and field tours, milking, hay rides, petting zoos, nature trails and samples for tasting. For a complete list of farms participating in Open Farm Day, go to www.getrealmaine.com.
