GROTON, Conn. — A federal criminal investigation has revealed that counterfeit semiconductors from Hong Kong or China were shipped to the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton.

The indictment alleges that military component distributor Peter Picone of Methuen, Mass. and others shipped counterfeit semiconductors to the Groton submarine base on at least three occasions between November 2011 and February 2012.

The Day of New London reports that officials with Naval Sea Systems Command and Electric Boat declined to comment this week on whether any of the counterfeit parts were installed on active-duty nuclear submarines stationed at the base.

Picone was arraigned Monday in federal court in Hartford on charges including conspiracy, fraud and trafficking in counterfeit goods. He pleaded not guilty and posted bail.
