RICHMOND

Friends of Merrymeeting Bay is sponsoring the second and last guided tour of the Fort Richmond archeological site by Maine Historic Preservation Commission archaeologist Leith Smith before the site is closed for bridge construction.

The event is 4 p.m. today at the Rt. 197 site.

The Maine Department of Transportation is replacing the Richmond-Dresden Bridge over the Kennebec River. The new bridge approach road will pass through the site of Fort Richmond, the first of the Kennebec River forts, constructed in 1721 and decommissioned in 1755.
