Geneva Quittmeyer Henderson died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on July 18, 2013, at the age of 91.
Geneva was born in Madison, Tenn., on Sept. 4, 1921, the youngest of 7 children to George and Effie MacKenzie Quittmeyer. She was raised in South Lancaster and Bolton, Mass. In 1941 she graduated from South Lancaster Academy and then attended Atlantic Union College where she majored in music and business. She married Maynard Murray Henderson in South Lancaster, Mass., on March 15, 1943, and this past March they celebrated their 70th anniversary with many family, friends and neighbors stopping by their home to help them celebrate their wonderful marriage.
Geneva was an accomplished musician, playing the piano, organ and vibraphone. She was the accountant for Maynard’s two businesses, Henderson’s Poultry Farm and the Brunswick Dental Lab.
Genena was well known for making many beautiful wedding and other special occasion cakes which she loved doing. Other things Geneva will be remembered for include her homemade bread and other delicious cooking, as well as her crocheted doilies and paper tole pictures. Some of her hobbies were birding, mineral hunting and gardening. She loved her garden and canned and froze the produce every summer.
Geneva and Maynard enjoyed traveling and have been to nearly every state including Alaska. They also like to camp and spent many years enjoying their island camp on Philips Lake.
Geneva was a lifelong member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church where she served as a deaconess all her adult life. Geneva leaves behind her husband Maynard of Brunswick and their 5 children: Marion Van Arsdale and husband Rick of Greeneville, TN, Patricia Fisher and husband Rodney of Panama City, FL, Beverly Snow and husband Bill of Oxford, ME, R. John Henderson of Zellwood, FL and James Henderson of Brunswick. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, her brother Wilbur Quittmeyer, daughter-in-law Judith Henderson, and brother-inlaw Wilfred Henderson and wife Mary.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Geneva will be held on Monday, July 22 at 11 a.m. at the Brunswick SDA Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Topsham SDA Church kitchen fund.
