State health officials are warning residents of southern Maine to take caution and check on elderly neighbors today.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Kennebec, Cumberland, Oxford, Androscoggin and York counties. High temperatures and humidity today will make temperatures feel above 100 degrees in some of these areas.
The sweltering conditions follow several days of temperatures in the 90s and unusually high night temperatures.
Maine Center for Disease Control says older adults, especially those who live alone, are more likely to experience illness from the heat. Neighbors and health care professionals should check on elderly residents to see if they have access to air conditioning and encourage them to drink fluids.
