Historical society sets Aug. 13 meeting

The Durham Historical Society is meeting Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m., in the Union Church/Old Town Hall.

Beans being served at Masonic Lodge

There will be a baked bean supper, Saturday, Aug. 10, from 4:30-6 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, Route 136 across from the River Park. On the menu are beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, pickles and homemade pies. The price is $7.50 adults, $3 children 5-12, and free for children under 5.

Summer lunches free for kids

Free lunches are available to all kids and teens age 18 and under. There are four sites in Freeport: at the Freeport Community Center, Mast Landing School, Morse Street School, and Village View Apartments Community Room. All lunches are served from 11:30-noon. Before- and after-school care available

Spaces are available at the Regional School Unit 5 Recreation and Community Education Laugh and Learn child care before- and after-school programs in the fall, located at the Morse Street School (K-2) and Mast Landing School (3-5) in Freeport, the Durham Community School (K-5) and the Pownal Elementary School (pre-K to 5).

Morning hours begin at 7 in Freeport and Durham. During the morning hours children are provided a variety of craft projects and creative centers within the classroom. After-school, there is time for play on the playground equipment, on the school trails or in the gymnasium. Also, the program provides an environment for children to do their homework and/or receive assistance with their studies. A healthy snack is provided during the aftercare portion of the day. The aftercare day ends at 5:30.

A new aftercare and kinder care program will start in the fall at the Pownal Elementary School. Kinder care hours in Pownal are projected as 11:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., or 11:45 a.m. -5:30 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays. Programming will be designed to enhance the kindergarten curriculum. Aftercare will be 3:30-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (pre-K to Grade 5).

Chicken barbecue Aug. 3

The First Congregational Church of Durham UCC, 773 Royalsborough Road, will host a chicken barbecue Saturday, Aug. 3, from 4:30-6 p.m., at the church. On the menu is barbecue chicken, choice of salads, rolls and beverage. In addition, there are frozen pies for sale and ready to bake, at $10 each. These pies are available at the supper.

The cost is $9 for those13 years and old and $3 for children 5 to 12. Children 4 years and under are free. Proceeds benefit the church.

Food pantry open Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday

Lisbon Area Christian Outreach serves the towns of Bowdoin, Durham and Lisbon Falls.

The hours are Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday 8-10 a.m. The Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street. The parking lot for the food pantry is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church off Berry Avenue. In addition to the food pantry there is a free clothing bank.
