WISCASSET — Historic New England will honor the sesquicentennial of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg with a lecture by Thomas Desjardins, historian for the Maine Department of Conservation and author of two books about Gettysburg, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Nickels-Sortwell House barn, 121 Main St.
Desjardins will tell the story of Maine native Ellis Spear, the Bowdoin graduate and Wiscasset school teacher who became Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain’s friend and second in command at Gettysburg.
