BRUNSWICK — A local branch of The Maine Green Independent Party is opposing construction of a railroad maintenance facility.
In a statement, Merrymeeting Greens said the proposed site “is poorly conceived and does not meet any reasonable criteria for protecting the environment or for considering the health or the quality of life of the people living in that neighborhood.”
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority wants to build a $12 million facility on federally-owned land between Stanwood Street and Church Road to park and maintain Amtrak Downeaster trains. Officials have said the facility is needed to maintain and expand passenger rail service here.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
