BRUNSWICK — Barbara Geneva Bowden, only 100, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013. She was born on June 18, 1913, in South Brooksville, a daughter of Geneva (Tapley) and Sumner Condon.

She graduated from Brooksville High School as salutatorian (the graduating class had three students). On June 8, 1932, she married Horace G. Bowden of Brooksville and together they had three children.

Barbara was a homemaker and worked over 20 years in the Morse School cafeteria in Freeport. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and collecting owls.

She was also a huge Alan Jackson fan and over the years a friendship grew between them. For her 100th birthday Alan sent many personalized gifts. Always a shy and reserved person, Barbara hoped there would be “no fuss” but that was not to be — attention was given on the Internet and on television and at Horizon Living. This picture was taken on that day.

Barbara learned to drive when she was in her 70s and was able to drive herself to appointments, grocery stores and simply shopping until her late 80s. She especially liked to shop with her daughter Cheryl and would sometimes follow her lead when making purchases.

Barbara will be remembered as a gentle woman with a kind spirit. Her generous and easy manner was greatly appreciated by all who knew her, wherever she was.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sedgwick of Topsham; her brother, Gordon Condon of Belfast; six grandchildren; and a large extended family. She was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Horace Bowden in 1988; her son, Marshall Bowden in 1998; her daughter, Jeannine Brown in 2011; and her brother, Robert Condon.

There will be a graveside service on Monday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. in Burr Cemetery, 56 Durham Road, Freeport, with the Rev. Philip Shearman officiating. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.c om to share condolences, memories and tributes with Barbara’s family.

For those who wish, donations may be made in Barbara’s memory to: Horizon Living and Rehabilitation Center, 29 Maurice Drive, Brunswick, ME 04011.
