A Woolwich motorcyclist was sent to Maine Medical Center as a precaution after an accident downtown on Thursday morning around 11:30 a.m.

Ben Gilmore, 60, of Woolwich, was approaching the corner of Front and Vine streets when a motorist, Tess Stafford, 29, of Hudson, N.Y., stopped at the stop sign exiting U.S. Route 1.  She began to proceed down Washington Street but did not see Gilmore, who had the right of way.

Gilmore laid the bike down to avoid the collision, and was injured in the process.

Bath police Lt. Robert Savary reported that Gilmore was walking while waiting for the ambulance, but was taken to Maine Medical for an evaluation.  “I think it was mostly precautionary,” Savary said.

Stafford was cited as the cause of the accident, and was summonsed on a charge of failure to yield.
