UNION — An agricultural fair that dates back to 1869 is kicking off in Union.
The Union Fair is a large family event that also hosts the Maine Wild Blueberry Festival. The fair gets underway on Saturday and runs through next Saturday, Aug. 24.
The fair features animal pulling contests, a carnival, harness racing, a demolition derby, fireworks and other attractions. The blueberry festival, which was begun in 1960, features the coronation of the Maine Wild Blueberry Queen, a blueberry pie eating contest, a blueberry spitting contest and other events.
The first Union Fair was held in 1869. Organizers say it’s been held each year since with the exception of 1943 and 1944.
