GEORGETOWN — Robert Hasenfus, 82, died peacefully at his home in Georgetown on August 17, 2013.

Bob Hasenfus was born on November 12, 1930, in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended elementary schools in West Roxbury and then attended Boston English and Boston College High Schools. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from Boston College in 1954, and earned a master’s degree in Safety Education from Central Missouri State University in 1973.

At the beginning of the Korean War, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves, and was discharged on December 4, 1956.

Mr. Hasenfus taught at Waldoboro High School, Anson Academy, and Madawaska High School, before serving for ten years as State Director of Pupil Transportation & Driver Education for Maine schools. He then became Superintendent of Schools for School Union 103 / Moosabec CSD in Jonesport and Beals Island, and later part-time Superintendent of Schools in Bridgewater, Maine and Grand Isle, Maine. He worked in the Maine education system for more than 40 years.

He wrote the original curriculum and then in the 1980s he taught the Driver Education Evaluation Program throughout the state, continuing until the early 1990s. Other positions included Placement Specialist and then Adolescent Health Advocate for the Aroostook County Action Program in the early 1980s. Bob coached basketball, Little League baseball, and hockey during his children’s playing years.

Summers of 1979 and 1980 Bob was an independent lobsterman in Jonesport, Maine, and from 1993-2012 he was a commercial shellfish harvester in Georgetown, Maine. Each of those endeavors was close to his heart, as he enjoyed being near the ocean, hearing the gulls, and smelling the salt air.

Mr. Hasenfus was also a member of numerous civic and social organizations, including the Madawaska Jaycees, Toastmasters International, the Learning Disabilities Association of Maine, the American Legion (Alfred Maxwell American Legion Post 40, in Winthrop, Maine), the Georgetown Historical Society, and the Goergetown Shellfish Conservation Committee. For several years he was the Emergency Management Officer for the town of Georgetown. He was also a member of the Good Sam Recreational Vehicle Owners Club, a member of the Maine Good Sam Staff, and a charter member of the Moose Trak Travelers and the Special Olympics Volunteers chapters of Good Sam.

Bob Hasenfus has been a member of the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department, both as a teenager in the 40’s and again for 25 years since moving back to Georgetown in 1988. This organization was very important to him, and he not only trained and worked as a firefighter, but also assisted with ambulance runs, traffic control and the department’s many fundraising activities. For a period of several years Bob was also the department’s communication officer.

Mr. Hasenfus enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and spending time with his family and friends.

Bob is predeceased by his parents, Nathaniel and Regina Hasenfus of West Roxbury, Massachusetts; his brother, Walter Hasenfus, of Boothbay, Maine; and his daughter, Carol Hasenfus Cobb, of Winthrop, Maine.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Barbara Hasenfus. Also by three of his children, Alfred “Fred” Hasenfus and his wife, Gale, of Winthrop, Maine; Sandra Moody of Winthrop, Maine; and David Hasenfus of Port Charlotte, Florida. By his 14 grandchildren: Angelique Hasenfus Dunn, her husband Doug, and their children Noah and Isabella; Jamie Hasenfus Smith, her husband, Jason, and their children Evan and Ostin; Frederick Hasenfus; Sarah Moody; Alysha Moody Mihalakis, her husband Steve, and their children TJ and Marilena; Clyde Moody, his wife Jenny, and their children Chloe and Clyde III; Kayla Moody; Tanya Moody; Sasha Bladen, her fiancé Mike Driscoll, and their daughter, Amara; Ellen Hasenfus Lucas and her husband, Collin; Tavis Hasenfus; Darrell Feeney, his wife, Mandi and their children Breonna and Robert; Rosa Regina “Gina” Feeney; and Kyle Feeney, He is also survived by his brother Richard Hasenfus and his wife Christina of Georgetown, Maine; his sister-in-law, Rosalie Hasenfus, of Boothbay, Maine; his sister, Barbara Cassidy, of East Wareham, Massachusetts; his brother, David Hasenfus of Georgetown, Maine & Needham, Massachusetts; his sister, Marie Magliozzi and her husband, Oreste, of Georgetown, Maine and Middleton, Massachusetts; and his brother Paul Hasenfus of Georgetown, Maine. By eighteen nephews and nieces, by numerous great nephews and great nieces, and many cousins.

Visitation will be at Brackett’s Funeral Home at 29 Federal Street in Brunswick from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 22nd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church at 132 McKeen Street in Brunswick on Friday, August 23rd, at 10:00 a.m.
