Former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe today announced her support for Paula Benoit in the special election for State Senate District 19, saying she has “a strong independent voice and fights tirelessly for her constituents.”
“Paula is precisely what we need in Augusta,” Snowe said in a statement released by the Benoit campaign.” As a successful businesswoman, Paula has a proven record of creating jobs and fighting harmful tax increases. She has earned praise for her willingness to work across party lines to help solve the problems facing our state, and I know she will bring to bear her depth of experience and results-oriented focus as an exceptional senator for the people of Senate District 19.”
Snowe joins U.S. Sen Susan Collins, R-Maine, in endorsing Benoit. Vitelli has claimed the endorsement of U.S. Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree and unions representing state workers, teachers and Bath Iron Works laborers.
The special election to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Seth Goodall, D-Richmond, is Tuesday, Aug. 27.
