BATH
Members of the largest labor union at Bath Iron Works have endorsed Eloise Vitelli in the Aug. 27 special election in Senate District 19.
IAMAW Local S-6 represents shipbuilders and maintenance workers in 28 trades at BIW.
“Our members work hard every day to provide for their families and the security of our country,” said Dan Dowl ing, president of Machinists Local S6 and a BIW electrician.
“They deserve and demand leaders in Augusta who are committed to protecting and strengthening the rights of workers and improving Maine’s economy. Eloise Vitelli will do just that.
“Eloise has extensive experience with creating jobs right here in Maine. The shipbuilders have endorsed Eloise Vitelli because we know she has the skills and expertise essential for building a strong Maine economy and for protecting the rights of Maine workers,” Dowling said.
IAMAW Local S-6 represents
800 workers who live in Senate District 19.
The endorsement is the third major union endorsement for Vitelli, who also counts support from unions for teachers and state workers.
Her Republican opponent, Paula Benoit, has announced the endorsements of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, both Republicans. Green Independent candidate Daniel Stromgren has declined endorsements.
Vitelli is married to Bob Kalish, a former staff writer for The Times Record.
