BRUNSWICK — Police identified the driver of a tractor trailer that overturned Tuesday on U.S. Route 1.
Bruce Merrill, 34, of Windham, was traveling south when he fell asleep, veered off the road and piled over the guardrail. He was taken to Mid Coast Hospital where he was treated for what police described as minor head injuries and released. No charges were filed.
The truck is owned by Hutchins Trucking of South Portland. No damage estimate was available.
Approximately 150 feet of guardrail was destroyed in the accident that closed the highway’s southbound lanes for several hours and routed traffic onto Bath Road.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
